Record what your preview shows, with your camera settings, color, background, and overlays, plus your microphone, straight to a folder on your Mac. Files are H.264 .mov, up to 4K if your camera delivers it. If something quits mid-take, Webcam Works recovers the file the next time it opens.
What's included.
What you see is what's saved
Record captures the final picture from the preview: camera settings, color, background, overlays, and Mirror Feed. It works whether or not the virtual camera is on.
Your microphone, recorded with it
Audio comes from the mic chosen on the Audio card: your webcam's own mic if it has one, otherwise the system default, or any input you pick. If microphone access is off, the Record card says video only before you start.
Size and frame rate
Output defaults to Match camera, or you can pick a smaller 16:9 size down to 1280 × 720. Sizes larger than your camera delivers aren't offered, and a 4:3 camera is cropped to 16:9 rather than boxed in. The frame rate follows the camera.
H.264 in a .mov file
Video is H.264 at about 12 Mbps for 1080p and 35 Mbps for 4K, with AAC audio. The Quality line on the Record card shows the exact size, frame rate, and bitrate before you press Record.
Saved where you want
Recordings go to a Webcam Works folder inside Movies unless you choose another folder. Each file is named with the camera and the date and time, so takes are easy to tell apart.
Crash recovery
The file is written in one-second pieces, so a crash costs you about a second, not the take. On the next launch, Webcam Works restores it with Crash Recovered in the name, and adds Unverified if it can't confirm the file is intact.
A mic dropout doesn't end the take
If the microphone fails mid-take, video keeps recording and the Record card tells you. Recording also waits until the camera is really sending video, so a take never starts on a blank frame.
Safe through sleep
While you record, your Mac won't drift into idle sleep. If you close the lid or choose Sleep, Webcam Works finishes and saves the file first.
Screen and camera together
In the virtual camera's Screen mode, Record saves your display or window with your camera in the corner, the same view you share as the Webcam Works Output window. Only your microphone is recorded, not the sound your Mac is playing.
How it works.
- 01Set up the pictureChoose your camera and adjust it until the preview looks right. Add a background or overlays on the Virtual Camera card if you want them in the file.
- 02Check the Record cardPick a folder and an Output size. The Quality line spells out what you'll get, for example 1920×1080 · 30 fps · H.264 · 12 Mbps · with audio.
- 03Press RecordClick Record on the preview or press Command-R. The take starts once the camera is actually delivering frames, and resolution and frame rate stay locked until you stop.
- 04Stop and find the fileClick Stop Recording or press Command-R again. A notice over the preview shows the saved file with a Show in Finder button, and Option-Command-R reveals the latest recording later.

01How do I record my webcam on a Mac?
macOS can already do it: open QuickTime Player, choose File, then New Movie Recording, and pick your camera and microphone. Webcam Works is for when you want your camera settings, color, background, or overlays in the file. Set up the picture, then click Record on the preview or press Command-R.
02How do I record my webcam and microphone at the same time on a Mac?
Webcam Works records both together. The microphone is the one chosen on the Audio card, which is your webcam's own mic if it has one. Allow microphone access when macOS asks. If access is off, the Quality line on the Record card says video only.
03Where does Webcam Works save recordings?
In your Movies folder, in a folder called Webcam Works. Use Choose Folder on the Record card to save somewhere else. Open Recordings Folder in the Record menu takes you straight there.
04What format are Webcam Works recordings?
QuickTime .mov files with H.264 video and AAC audio, at the size set under Output and your camera's frame rate. There's no ProRes or HEVC option. H.264 plays almost everywhere and imports into common video editors.
05Can I record my webcam while I'm on a Zoom call?
Yes, if Zoom is using Webcam Works Camera. Webcam Works keeps the webcam and feeds both the call and the recording. If Zoom is using your webcam directly, Webcam Works pauses its own preview, and Record is unavailable until Zoom stops using the camera.
06What happens to a recording if my Mac crashes?
Webcam Works writes the file in one-second pieces while you record. If the app or your Mac quits unexpectedly, the next launch restores the take to your recordings folder with Crash Recovered in its name. If it can't verify the file, the name also says Unverified, because the file may be damaged.
07Can I record my screen and webcam at the same time on a Mac?
Yes. Set the Virtual Camera mode to Screen, choose a display or a window, place your camera bubble, and press Record. The file has your screen, your camera in the corner, and your microphone. It doesn't capture the sound your Mac is playing.
